Last night, American crime drama Spotlight took the spotlight at the year’s most highly anticipated film award ceremony as it won Best Picture. Investigative journalism and the role of journalists are central themes of this tense film which follows the investigative journalism unit Spotlight of historic American newspaper The Boston Globe. The team of journalists uncover awful cases of systemic and widespread child sex abuse by numerous Roman Catholic priests, and the series of reports won the newspaper a Pulitzer Prize in 2003. Not only a gripping watch for any film fan, Spotlight showcases the importance of high-quality investigative journalism, the responsibility journalists have in giving a voice to the voiceless and holding those in power accountable for their actions.
